Heat Capacity Anomalies of Superfluid 4He under the Influence of a Counterflow near Tl

چکیده
We present a thermodynamic treatment of superfluid helium in the presence of an applied heat current, Q, which produces a counterflow velocity $ W . We show that the heat capacity can be expressed in terms of the dependence of the superfluid density on $ W . Near Tl, both mean field theory and renormalization group theory give a divergent heat capacity with an exponent of 0.5 at a depressed transition temperature. In contrast, if $ W rather than Q is held constant, the heat capacity remains finite. [S0031-9007(96)00890-3]

Specific Heat and Scaling of 4He Confined in a Planar Geometry
We report measurements of the specific heat of thick helium films to test scaling predictions near the superfluid transition, Tl. These films, bounded by two silicon wafers, range in thickness from 0.107 to 0.692 mm. The specific heat of the films is suppressed relative to that of bulk helium, and the difference of the data from bulk helium scales well with the exponent of the correlation lengt...
متن کاملMetastable helium molecules as tracers in superfluid 4He.
Metastable helium molecules generated in a discharge near a sharp tungsten tip immersed in superfluid 4He are imaged using a laser-induced-fluorescence technique. By pulsing the tip, a small cloud of He(2*) molecules is produced. We can determine the normal-fluid velocity in a heat-induced counterflow by tracing the position of a single molecule cloud. As we run the tip in continuous field-emis...
متن کاملEnhanced heat capacity and a new temperature instability in superfluid 4He in the presence of a constant heat flux near t(lambda)
We present the first experimental evidence that the heat capacity of superfluid 4He, at temperatures very close to the lambda point T(lambda), is enhanced by a constant heat flux Q. The heat capacity at constant Q, C(Q), is predicted to diverge at a temperature T(c)(Q)<T(lambda) at which superflow becomes unstable. In agreement with previous measurements, we find that dissipation enters our cel...
متن کاملDynamics of superfluid 4He: Two-scale approach
The paper explores the two scale approach to the incompressible dynamics of superfluid 4He. The fluid is described by a system of equations: Navier–Stokes and Euler equations for the macroscopic normal and superfluid velocity fields respectively. The two equations couple via a mutual friction force exerted on superfluid (quantum) vortices by the normal component. The magnitude of this force, ca...
متن کاملCritical scaling properties at the superfluid transition of 4He in aerogel.
We study the superfluid transition of 4He in aerogel by Monte Carlo simulations and finite size scaling analysis. Aerogel is a highly porous silica glass, which we model by a diffusion limited cluster aggregation model. The superfluid is modeled by a three dimensional XY model, with excluded bonds to sites on the aerogel cluster. We obtain the correlation length exponent nu=0.73+/-0.02, in reas...
